Invention Multimedia Assignment

Step One: Check your understanding about and familiarity with some common inventions. Take the quiz at the Great Idea Finder. Read the short paragraph and decide what invention is described. Also play the game called Inventing Modern America From the Microwave to the Mouse to determine whether you know which of two inventions were produced first.

Step Two: First, visit the About.com site "Historical Inventions". This site lists the inventions in alphabetical order. To find your invention, use the alphabetical index (A--Z) just below the words "Inventors Historical Inventions". Click on the first letter of your invention's name. Activate the link for the invention you have been assigned and preview the page. Locate information about the problem that the inventor was attempting to solve. Explain whether s/he solved that problem or invented something more unexpected.

Use your graphic organizer to gather information for a HyperStudio stack on your assigned invention

Step Three: Next, visit the Invention Myths on the Great Idea Finder web site. Activate the link for the invention you have been assigned and preview the page. Locate information about the problem that the inventor was attempting to solve. Explain whether s/he solved that problem or invented something more unexpected.

IF your invention is not listed here, go to the next source, The World Book.

Notice that each page has:

Most of the pages also have:

* a history of its invention

* a list of web sites to visit to obtain additional information

* a listing of books to purchase at web booksellers

* a section called "Fun Facts."

* a graphic of the object

Step Four:Visit the World Book to locate information about your invention. Locate information about the problem that the inventor was attempting to solve. Explain whether s/he solved that problem or invented something more unexpected.

Students will consider current technologies before design-
ing new ones in this inventors lesson plan for middle school
students. They will work in groups to consider the worst in-
ventions, describing negative criteria, then brainstorm pos-
itive criteria to make a good invention. They will also need
to use persuasive writing skills in order to promote their
final products; see complete directions here. Use the 2nd
link above to enter great final products into the Explora-
vision student competition for envisioning future technology.
